Nobel Peace Prize Loses Credibility

Nobel Peace PrizeThis morning, Obama woke to the wonderful surprise of being awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. Hmmm, I suppose I could end there, seeing how that last sentence has all the irony one could ask for in a blog topic and in the very reading of it, one can immediately see the problem with the statement. So, perhaps there isn’t much to explain. However, there are some things that I know are going to get lost in all the “Obama praising” that should be pointed out.

Okay, so lets see… Nobel Prize winners, you know, guys that are the likes of Einstein, actually accomplish something. They pour all their blood, sweat and tears into their life’s work and at some point, several years to several decades later, they receive the award because their work has changed the world in some great and unmistakable way. We applaud them for their efforts. This past week, there was an award given to the guy who invented fiber optics back in the 60′s. There was another award given to the two guys who invented the CCD (the components that are at the core of satellite imagery and modern digital cameras) back in the 60′s at Bell Labs. These are amazing accomplishments.

So, just for a second, lets think about this. Obama has been in office less than one year. His efforts, while his intentions may be seen by some as positive, have been to push his agenda as fast as he can so we don’t have the time to actually contemplate what’s going on. Meanwhile, there’s a spending frenzy, Cash for Clunkers has failed, he’s been an indecisive pansy that can’t decide whether he wants to win the war or have them over for tea, he’s been caught foot-in-mouth over countless issues, and his idea of “fundamental change” is to lead this country further and further down the socialist path. He’s not the first president to get a Nobel Peace Price… but at least give it time for the dust he’s stirring up to settle before deciding whether or not his efforts resulted in peace or not.

It was stated that one of the reasons he received the award was for continued “encouragement” in his international peace efforts. Mrs. Blackman, my 4th grade teacher, used to give me little stars on my papers for encouragement… but he gets a Nobel Peace Prize and $1.4 million. I can’t help but wonder if the Nobel awarding process was somehow tainted as a way to improve Obama’s rapidly falling approval rating. Or perhaps the Nobel awarding panel is really that ignorant. Either way, the Nobel Prize is off my list of what I consider to be an honorable award.

Perhaps this story will end a little like that of Fritz Haber. Doesn’t sound familiar? Maybe that’s because his work in chemistry (poisonous gases, explosives, etc…) and allegiance to Germany is what eventually led to the gassing of millions of Jews, including many of his own family (For those of you who still aren’t sure, yes, the Holocaust DID indeed happen). Ironically, Haber had received the 1918 Nobel Prize for chemistry. His work in nitrogen fertilizers (nitrogen fixing) is what allows our global society to create enough nitrogen (synthetic fertilizer) for our agricultural needs, without which we would have to solely rely on naturally occurring sources. What’s the big deal? Scientists speculate that millions of us could not even exist on this earth without this discovery because there would not be enough natural capacity to fertilize our crops if we were left to the limits of what nature provides.

So this once great man, with a strong allegiance to his country (German), saves millions of people with his discoveries, get a Nobel Prize, gets chased from his country, only to result in millions of people (including relatives) being slaughtered at the hands of his invention. Likewise, there will come a point where we will see this administration for what it really is. The dust will settle and the consequences will set in.

Frankly, Obama is a discount firecracker. His fuse as been burning and getting people all excited for what’s about to happen. Well, the fuse has fizzled out and people are disillusioned, still waiting for the BOOM! This Nobel Prize is just a failed attempt at blowing at the fuze, and all we’re left with is a dud. You can go home now people, the show is over. Move along now.
